EMEDEVI is an AILA Research Network (ReN), set up in 2021, addressing equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) issues in research related to language education, focusing on English as a Medium of Education (EME), multilingualism and Virtual Exchange.
About the ReN
English as a Medium of Education (EME)
Research that explores the use of English as a Medium of Education in different educational contexts.
Virtual Exchange
Research that examines Virtual Exchange and its potential for collaborative, inclusive and transformative learning.
Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI)
Research that advances equitym diversity and inclusion in language education and research.
Multilingualism
Research that values multilingual perspectives and promotes language diversity in education and research.
The research aims to redress inequalities in participation in global conversations about language education, stimulate debate on emergin ecologies of knowledge in applied linguistics, provide pluralistic perspective on language learning and teachingm and contribute do decolonising the language education curriculum.
The ReN is open to a range of research methods, theories and traditions in different contexts, including transdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research.
The network includes established and early carrer research from many countries across AILA regional associations, and provides a platform for information, networking, support and scholarship for scholars and students interested in the topics.

EMEVEDI ReN Symposium at AILA 2027 in Vancouver
Languages for Peace Education
The proposed symposium addresses increasing global crises and demonstrates how EME, Multilingualism and Virtual Exchange are core to broader societal compassion and understanding.
It highlights EME, Multilingualism and Virtual Exchange for Global Citizenship education (GCE), extendes peacebuilding beyond local conflicts and encouraging students to understand their role in a global context; the approach is termed Critical GCE in alignment with Andreotti (2006, 2014).
The contributions will explore the link between multilingualism, collaborative online international learning (COIL/VE), Critical GCE and Education for Peace.
The papers selected for the symposium comply with the fundamental Equality, Diversity and Inclusion principles underpinning this REN.
